DOLGEVILLE - Terry L. Owen, 73 of S. Helmer Ave., Dolgeville, NY passed away with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer at the Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, NY on Saturday, September 22, 2018.
Terry Lee Owen was born on February 28, 1945 in Rome, NY. He was raised in the Rome area by his late mother, Marilyn Owen and his late stepfather Carl James. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Secondary Social Studies Elementary Education in 1971 from SUNY Cortland, where he also met his future wife. He received his Master’s degree in 1976.
Terry was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Starr on August, 22, 1970 in Forestburgh, NY. After briefly living in an apartment in Herkimer, NY, they purchased a home in Dolgeville, NY where they have lived for the last 42 years.
He was hired as an elementary school teacher in the Herkimer, NY school district in 1971. He taught school there for the next 36 years until his retirement in 2007. He had a love for teaching and continued substitute teaching at East Herkimer Elementary School until 2012.
He enjoyed listening to music, loved to travel, taking vacations to the ocean, dancing with his wife and rooting for the Yankees. He also enjoyed setting up and enjoying setting up his Lionel Train Christmas village.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Owen, his daughters, Sherry Anne Owen, Herkimer and Susan Miller, his son-in-law Gregg Miller, Saratoga Springs, his grandchildren, Nathaniel Miller and Benjamin Miller. He was predeceased by his mother Marilyn James, stepfather Carlos James, brother Noah James, and his special Aunt, Maoria McCue.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 11:00 am from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY with the Deacon James Bower officiating. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 10-11 am and to attend the funeral services to follow.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Basset Hospitals of Cooperstown and Little Falls for their wonderful care and compassion given to Terry during his illness, especially Chaplain Betsy Jay.
It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Terry be made to a scholarship fund for graduating students of Herkimer Central School pursuing a degree in Social Studies.
